* 10-40 yo patients
* Subacute onset
* Acute onset
* Painful neck swelling
* Sudden fever with sever neck pain, dysphagia, and dysphonia
* Symotoms of thyrotoxicosis followed by hypothyroid symptoms
* Self limiting


* Sever neck tenderness, redness, and swelling  
* Tender mid-line neck swelling


* Elevated WBC count
* Elevated ESR
* Normal T3, t4, and TSH


* Abscess may be present on U/S
* Initial increase in T3 and T4 with decreased TSH
* Followed by decrease in T3 and T4 with increased TSH
* Return to normal baseline thyroid function
 
* Poorly defined hypechogenic region on U/S
* Decreased vascularity in the affected areas
* Low uptake thyroid iodine scan


* Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pyogenes, Streptococcus epidermidis, and Streptococcus pneumoniae are the most common isolated organisms
