* 5-9 days duration
* Low grade fever, anorexia, and malaise
* Unilateral/bilateral ear pain
* May have meningitis or orchitis symptoms




* Localized bilateral parotid tenderness

* Sever local unilateral parotid pain
* May have high fever, chills, trismus, and dysphagia
* History of dehydration or intubation


* Elevated WBC count


* Increased serum amylase
* Sudden onset of firm, tender, unilateral parotid swelling
* Hypoechogenic lesion surrounded by an irregular echogenic rim on U/S indicates abscess collection




* Parotid enlargement on CT
* Staphylococcus aureus (most commonly isolated pathogen)
* Increased in homogeneous parenchymal density
* Polymicrobial
* Mild overlying subcutaneous smudging
