- Infants and children
- May have sore throat, spiking fever, neck stiffness, odynophagia, and neck swelling
- Retropharyngeal bulge, stridor, drooling, nuchal rigidity, torticollis and cervical adenopathy
- Elevated WBC count
- Elevated CRP
- Widening of the retropharyngeal soft tissue on X-ray
