Overview

Epidemiology and Demographics

Prevalence

  • The prevalence of lung cancer is approximately 100 per 100,000 individuals in the United states. [1]
  • The most common type of lung cancer is non–small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). About 85%–90% of all lung cancers are non–small cell lung cancer. The other 10%–15% are small cell lung cancer.[2]

Incidence

  • The age-adjusted incidence of lung cancer is approximately 58.7 per 100,000 individuals worldwide based on 2008-2012 cases.[3]

Age

  • The incidence of lung cancer increases with age; the median age at diagnosis is 70 years.[3]

Gender

  • Males are more commonly affected with lung cancer than females. The male to female ratio is approximately 1.5 to 1.[3]

Race

  • Lung cancer usually affects individuals of the African American race. Asian and Hispanic individuals are less likely to develop lung cancer.[3]
