Overview
A detailed and thorough history from the patient is necessary. Specific areas of focus when obtaining a history from the patient include history of smoking, use of retinoids, prior history of acne, rosacea, and Seborrheic dermatitis. Common symptoms of blepharitis include red eye, red swollen eyelids, Itchy eyelids, burning sensation, crusting or matting of eyelashes in the morning, light sensitivity, blurred vision, and oily skin.[1][2]
History
A detailed and thorough history from the patient is necessary. Specific areas of focus when obtaining a history from the patient include:[1][2]
- Duration of symptoms (chronic course with intermittent exacerbations and eruptions)
- Unilateral or bilateral presentation
- History of Seborrheic dermatitis (associated with symptoms of scalp itching, flaking, and oily skin).
- History of Rosacea (associated with a oily skin, food and environmental intolerances, red and swollen nose, and facial flushing)
- Exacerbating conditions (smoking, contact lenses, and use ofretinoids)
- History of acne or eczema
Symptoms
Symptoms of blepharitis may include the following:[2][3][4]
- Red eye
- Red and swollen eyelids
- Itchy eyelids
- Excessive tearing
- Gritty sensation
- Burning sensation
- Crusting or matting of eyelashes in the morning
- Flaking or scaling of the eyelid skin
- Light sensitivity
- Blurred vision
- Facial flushing
- Scalp itching
- Oily skin
