Overview
Mastitis can be classified according to several subtypes based on the etiology, duration of disease, anatomical location, immunological association and age of patient.
Classification
Mastitis can be classified according to several subtypes based on the etiology, duration of disease, anatomical location, immunological association and age of patient as follows:
Puerperal vs. Nonpuerperal Mastitis
This classification is important when counseling patients on prevention.
Chronic vs. Acute Mastitis
Periductal Vs. Ductal
Autoimmune vs. non-autoimmune Mastitis
Examples of autoimmune Mastitis include granulomatous and lupus mastitis. This classification is especially important because of its unique therapeutic approach. [1] [2] [3]
Pre-pubertal Mastitis
This helps in making treatment decisions.
