CSF examination in neurosyphilis
- May help to diagnose neurosyphilis
- Include CSF cell count or protein and a reactive CSF-VDRL or CSF FTA-ABS test
- CSF-VDRL is highly specific but insensitive
- CSF FTA-ABS test is less specific for neurosyphilis than the CSF-VDRL but is highly sensitive
Screening tests for other STIs
Biopsy
Biopsy may be considered if clinical findings does not correlate with negative serological tests and there is strong index of suspicion for syphilis.
