History and Symptoms
Symptoms of stress cardiomyopathy can mimic acute coronary syndrome. The most common presenting symptoms are:[1][2]
- Chest pain or chest tightness
- Shortness of breath
- Syncope in rare cases
When taking the history from a patient with suspected stress cardiomyopathy, make sure to ask about:[2]
- Personal history of hypertension, hyperlipidemia, paroxysmal atrial fibrillation, syncope, hypoglycemia or stroke
- Triggering event(s) to symptoms such as an unexpected death, being a victim of domestic violence or engaging in an argument or performing strenuous physical activity
