| ==Overview==
| |
| Congenital rubella syndrome is caused by [[rubella virus]] which is a single stranded [[RNA]] toga virus.
| |
| | |
| ==Causes==
| |
| Congenital rubella syndrome is caused by maternal-fetal transmission of rubella virus. It belongs to the family [[Togaviridae]]. It is spherical in structure, covered by a lipid membrane derived from the host [[cell membrane]]. There are prominent spikes (projections) composed of the viral envelope proteins E1 and E2 embedded in the membrane. This envelope encloses a positive single stranded RNA.
