TS bears all the hallmarks of an infectious disease although the exact etiology remains largely unknown despite numerous efforts to identify the etiological agent.

The cause of tropical sprue is not known. It has been suggested that it is caused by bacterial, viral, amoebal, or parasitic infection which affects residents of (or visitors to) the tropics. Folic acid deficiency and rancid fat have also been suggested as possible causes.
