Causes
Small bowel bacterial overgrowth is thought to be the primary cause for tropical sprue but the exact cause of tropical sprue is unknown. It occurs in regions where enteric infections are common and the most common bacteria isolated in patients with tropical sprue include:[1][2]
- Escherichia coli
- Klebsiella pneumoniae
- Enterobacter cloace
