Epidemiology and Demographics
Incidence
The incidence of secondary peritonitis is often difficult to assess since it may occur in different settings, most often in the surgical ICU especially in patients with multi-organ failure. The incidence of diffuse postoperative peritonitis averages between 30 and 42%.
Case Fatality Rate
Morbidity and mortality of patient with secondary peritonitis is ~30%.[1][2]. Despite the development of antibiotics and significant improvement in intensive care support, morbidity is high and mortality rates remain between 30-66%.
Age
The mean age of perforation peritonitis is more than 60 years.
