Bacteriologic confirmation is not required. C. tetani can be found in individuals without tetanus and only 30% of tetanic wounds may yield the pathogen.[1]

- An injury involving contact of broken skin with contaminated environment, soil or dust.
- An absent or inconsistent history of immunizations.
