Differentiating Mastoiditis from other Diseases

Mastoiditis must be differentiated from other diseases that cause postauricular inflammation or swelling

Disease	Findings
Mastoiditis	Posterior ear pain, local erythema and tenderness and edema on the mastoid bone, outward and upward displaced auricle, abnormal tympanic membrane
Lymphadenopathy	Well defined and mobile mass, no effect on auricle and tympanic mass
Periauricular inflammation or cellulitis	Tympanic membrane is normal. Mostly due to a skin minor trauma.
Perichondritis of the auricle	Sd by swelling and erythema of the pin. Tsiditis, the postauricular crease is preserved, and the tympanic membrane appears normal.
mumps	Parotid glands swelling, tympanic membrane is normal
Mastoid tumors	Tympanic membrane is normal
