Mastoiditis may be classified into acute and sub acute and chronic forms, depending on the timing of presentation and duration.

Mastoiditis may be classified into acute, sub acute and chronic forms based on disease duration:[1][2]
Acute
- Mastoid air cells infection less than one month.
subacute
- Indolent infection more than one month.
Chronic
- Mastoid air cells infection for months to years, mostly due to chronically infected ear in the condition such as chronic otitis media.
