Overview
There are specific cut-offs for serum glucose level, ketone levels, body pH and serum bicarbonate levels for the diagnosis for diabetic ketoacidosis.
Diagnostic Criteria
The diagnosis of DKA is based on the following features/criteria:
- Elevated serum glucose level (greater than 250 mg per dL [13.88 mmol per L])
- Elevated serum ketone level
- pH less than 7.3
- Serum bicarbonate level less than 18 mEq per L (18 mmol per L)
