History and Symptoms

History

Obtaining a history gives important information in making a diagnosis of Plummer-Vinson syndrome. It provides an insight into the cause, precipitating factors, and associated comorbid conditions. A complete history will help determine the correct therapy and helps in determining the prognosis. The areas of focus should be on onset, duration, and progression of symptoms such as:

• Dysphagia (solids or liquids)
• Weakness and fatigue
• Dyspnea
• Weight loss
• Any history of choking spells or aspiration
• Any history of bleeding disorders

Common Symptoms

• Dysphagia (more for solids)
• Pallor
• Weakness
• Pain
• Burning sensation (in tongue and oral mucosa)
• Dry tongue
• painful cracks in the angles of a dry mouth.

• Odynophagia
• Atrophic Glossitis
• Angular stomatitis

Patients with iron deficiency anemia may report the following: Fatigue Leg cramps on climbing stairs Craving ice (in some cases, cold celery or other cold vegetables) to suck or chew

Less common symptoms

• Cold intolerance
• Reduced resistance to infection
• Altered behavior
• Craving ice (in some cases, cold celery or other cold vegetables)
