Esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) is the gold standard test for the diagnosis of gastrointestinal varices. Varices may be classified into the following types based on their size:
- Small varices
- Minimally elevated veins above the esophageal mucosal surface
- Medium varices
- Tortuous veins occupying less than one-third of the esophageal lumen
- Large varices
- Occupying more than one-third of the esophageal lumen
