Overview
The majority of patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease are asymptomatic. However, infrequently patients may complain of fatigue, malaise and dull right upper quadrant abdominal discomfort. Mild jaundice can rarely be noticed. More commonly it is diagnosed as a result of abnormal liver function tests during routine blood tests. Often following an asymptomatic course, the disease may present first with cirrhosis and/or the complication of portal hypertension.
History
There is no significant history to be noted in patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. However, history of alcohol consumption and family history of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease must be obtained.
Symptoms

- Hepatomegaly
- Fatigue
- Ascites
- Gynecomastia ( due to decreased estrogen clearance by liver damage )
- Right upper quadrant abdominal pain
- Jaundice
- Splenomegaly
- Most of the time its an incidental diagnosis or the disease may present first with cirrhosis and/or the complication of portal hypertension.
