Overview
In order to prevent mesenteric ischemia, the risk factors should be controlled avidly. Healthy life style changes and screening of comorbidities posing a risk to developing mesenteric ischemia are the most important factors.
Primary Prevention
The single most important factor that can prevent the development of mesenteric ischemia is control of the underlying comorbidities and risk factors. One of the most important risk factors is atherosclerosis which can be prevented.
The following lifestyle changes can lower the risk for narrowing of the arteries and hence the risk of developing atherosclerosis.
Life style modifications:
- Exercise
- Following a healthy diet
- Treatment for a heart arrhythmia
- Keeping blood cholesterol under control
- Control of blood pressure
- Cessation of smoking
- Low salt diet
- Diet rich in fruits and vegetables
To prevent acute mesenteric artery ischemia, also control any heart rhythm problems that may cause thrombosis of blood.
