Overview

Prevention depends on the cause. Treating conditions, such as tumors and hernias, that can lead to obstruction may reduce your risk of getting an obstruction. Some causes of obstruction cannot be prevented.

• Early mobilization
• Avoid insertion of Ryle's tube (nasogastric tube)
• Early oral feeding with high carbohydrate fluid
• Administration of clear fluids within 2-3 hours of surgery
• Limited parenteral fluids
• Avoidance of pain medications such as opiates
• Epidural catheter for postoperative analgesia
