Life-threatening Causes
- Life-threatening causes include conditions which may result in death or permanent disability within 24 hours if left untreated. There are no life-threatening causes of sialolithiasis
Causes
The exact etiology of sialolithiasis is not well understood, but it is thought that the more alkaline, viscous saliva with relative stagnation of salivary flow and calcium concentration may be important.
Submandibular glands are more prone to sialolithiasis because of long and sinuous position of Wharton's duct.[1]
