The exact worldwide incidence and prevalence of infectious colitis is not fully known. However, it is estimated that 2 to 4 billion episodes of infectious diarrhea (including infectious colitis) occur annually with the largest burden in developing countries. Enteric bacteria are the most common pathogens causing infectious colitis. The highest morbidity and mortality from infectious colitis is in children under the age of five years.[1][2][3][4][5]

The overall worldwide incidence and prevalence of infectious colitis is unknown, especially in developing countries which have the highest burden of diarrhea disease. The Epidemiology and Demography of infectious colitis depends on the pathogen causing infectious colitis as follows:
- Shigella spp.
- Campylobacter jejuni
- Clostridium difficile
- Escherichia coli
- Nontyphoidal Salmonella
- Entameoba histolytica
- Chlamydia trachomatis
- Cytomegalovirus
