Overview
Natural History
With the exception of few case reports describing survival without surgery, the mortality rate of untreated Boerhaave syndrome is nearly 100%.[1]
Complications
- Pneumomediastinum
- Mediastinitis (air or inflammation of the mediastinum)
- Sepsis
- Posterior mediastinal abscess[2]
Prognosis
Boerhaave's syndrome has a high mortality rate (14-40%).The nonspecific clinical signs contributes to the poor outcome of Boerhaave syndrome. [3][4]
