Primary Prevention
There are no established measures for the primary prevention of ascending cholangitis. However, treatment of obstructing factors like gallstones, tumors, and infestations of parasites may reduce the risk for some people. In addition to that, patients undergoing ERCP should have prophylactic antibiotics to prevent biliary infection.[1]. Patients with compromised biliary systems are also prone to developing recurrent cholangitis and may benefit from antibiotic maintenance therapy, given daily in lower-than-therapeutic dosages[2][3][4][5]
