Overview
Folic acid supplementation in conditions which need more folate like pregnancy and lactation or in malabsorption e.g., celiac disease or a loss e.g., chronic hemolytic disorder. Folic acid supplementation in pregnant women can also prevent fetal neural tube defects.
Prevention
The following steps can be done to prevent macrocytic anemia:[1][2][3][4][3]
- Folic acid supplementation in conditions which need more folate like pregnancy and lactation or in malabsorption e.g., celiac disease or a loss e.g., chronic hemolytic disorder
- Folic acid supplementation in pregnant women can also prevent fetal neural tube defects
- Solely folate supplementation without vitamin B-12 replacement therapy may precipitate subacute combined degeneration of spinal cord
