Overview
Hepatocellular adenoma was first discovered by Hugh A. Edmondson in 1958 following 50,000 autopsies.[1]
Historical perspective
- In 1958, the hepatocellular adenoma was first described by Edmondson as an encapsulated liver tumor that does not contain bile ducts, when he identified two such lesions in 50,000 autopsies.[2][3]
- In 1973, Baum reported the important relationship between oral contraceptive use and development of hepatocellular adenomas in seven patients.[4][5]
- In 1970s several subsequent case series supported the hypothesis of an association between the oral contraceptive pill and hepatocellular adenomas.[6]
- In 1976, Edmondson published a case control study giving further evidence of this association. [7]
