Overview
Brain MRI may be helpful in the detection of ischemic stroke in patients with polycythemia vera. Abdominal MRI can help with diagnosis of mesenteric thrombosis.
Brain MRI
MRI may be helpful in the detection of anatomic abnormalities in patients with polycythemia vera. Of note, MRI is a particularly expensive test and should be reserved for patients in whom CT or ultrasound are nondiagnostic.
- Ischemia stroke: MRI of the brain is the most sensitive test for assessment of cerebral vascular abnormalities. Patients with polycythemia vera frequently develop thrombotic complications such as ischemic stroke, especially for patients who are at high risk for thrombotic events.[1][2]
- Mesenteric thrombosis: MRI of the abdomen is the most sensitive test for assessment of thrombosis of the mesenteric vasculature, such as the portal vein, splenic vein, superior mesenteric vein, or inferior mesenteric vein.
There are no MRI findings associated with polycythemia vera. However, a MRI may be helpful in the diagnosis of complications of polycythemia vera, which include:[1][2]
