Overview
Ultrasound may be helpful in the diagnosis of fibroadenoma. Findings on ultrasound suggestive of fibrodenoma include a well-circumscribed, round to ovoid, macrolobulated mass that is generally uniformly hypoechogenic.
Ultrasound
- Ultrasound may be helpful in the diagnosis of fibroadenoma.
- It is the most commonly used breast imaging method in adolescents. It can determine if a mass is solid or cystic. Findings on ultrasound suggestive of fibrodenoma include:[1][2][3]
- Well-circumscribed, round to ovoid mass
- Macrolobulated mass with a smooth contour
- Uniformly distributed weak internal echoes
- Intermediate acoustic attenuation
- Surrounded by a thin echogenic rim (pseudocapsule)
- Calcification may be detectable in 10% of the cases
- Serial ultrasounds may be needed look for changes in the size of the fibroadenoma overtime.[2]
- Ultrasound may lack the ability to distinguish benign masses from cancer.[4]
