Classification of anemia
Anemia can be broadly classified into 3 major classes.
- Microcytic anemia
- Macrocytic anemia
- Normocytic anemia
Microcytic anemia
For anemia to be classified as Microcytic, the Mean Corpuscular Volume (MCV) has be less than 80fL. Normal MCV is usually between the rage of 80-100fL. The MCV is the average size of a regular RBC.
- Iron deficiency anemia
- Thallassemia
- Sideroblastic anemia
- Anemia of chronic disease
