Overview

PSVT may be classified into several sub types based on underlying mechanism of tachycardia and ECG findings.

ECG findings include 2 subtypes: Short PR interval tachycardia and long PR interval tachycardia.

Classification

  • PSVT can be classified based on the underling mechanism and ECG findings.
  • PSVT may be classified based on the underlying mechanism of tachycardia into [1][2][3][4][5][6][7]
      • AV nodal reentry (AVNRT)
      • AV reentry (AVRT)
      • Atrial tachycardia
      • Sinoatrial nodal reentrant tachycardia (SANRT)
      • Intra atrial reentrant tachycardia (IART)
      • Junctional ectopic tachycardia and nonparoxysmal junctional tachycardia (nonreentrent tachycardia, rare in adults, however represent a common cause of PSVT in children )
  • PSVT may be classified based on the ECG appearance into [2]:
    • Short RP interval tachycardia [3][4][8]:
      • AVNRT
      • AVRT
      • Atrial tachycardia with first-degree AV block
    • Prolonged RP interval tachycardia [7][9]:
      • Atypical AVNRT (fast-slow)
      • Atrial tachycardia
      • Sinoatrial nodal reentrant tachycardia (SANRT)
      • Permanent junctional reciprocal tachycardia (PJRT)
