Overview
Anemia of prematurity may be caused by a combination of blood loss, decreased red blood cells production, and shortened lifespan of red blood cells.
Causes
Common causes of anemia of prematurity include[1]
- Premature birth
- Phlebotomy for laboratory testing in preterm infants
- Shortened lifespan of RBC
Less common causes of anemia of prematurity include[2]
- Iron, Vitamin B6, Vitamin E, and Folate deficiencies
