Overview
Cough can be divided into productive cough and non-productive cough.
Classification
Cough may be classified according to duration into 3 groups:
- Acute coughs last less than 3 weeks
- Subacute coughs last between 3 and 8 weeks
- Chronic coughs last longer than 8 weeks
Cough may be further classified into the following:
- Productive cough that result in mucus secretions
- Nonproductive cough that does not produce sputum
