The risk of developing a heart murmur include:
- Congenital heart defects
- Endocarditis
- Family history of heart defects
- History of rheumatic fever
- Uncontrolled hypertension, hyperthyroidism, endocarditis, pulmonary hypertension, carcinoid syndrome, hypereosinophilic syndrome, systemic lupus erythematosus, rheumatoid arthritis.
- During pregnancy uncontrolled diabetes or rubella infection, increases the risk of developing heart defects and a heart murmur in the baby.
- Taking certain medications or illegal drugs during pregnancy.
