Overview
Natural history, complications and prognosis largely depend on the underlying cause of back pain. Back pain progresses and presents varialbly depending on the pathology. Back pain of any origin can lead to deformity, disability, depression, weight gain, social isolation, decreased quality of life, and slee disturbances. Prognosis varies according to the underlying etiology, most patients will recover with within weeks. Recurrent and chronic cases are more resistant to treatment.

Back pain progresses and presents varialbly depending on the pathology.
Complications
Back pain of any origin can lead to the following complications:[1]
- Deformity
- Long term disabiliy
- Depression
- Weight gain
- Social distancing
- Decreased quality of life
- Sleep disturbances
Prognosis
- Prognosis varies according to the underlying etiology.
- Most patients will recover with within weeks.[2]
- Recurrent and chronic cases are more resistant to treatment.[2]
- Back pain due to oncologic cause depend upon the prognosis of the type of cancer.[3]
