Overview
An x-ray may be helpful in the diagnosis of tracheitis. Findings on an x-ray suggestive of tracheitis include subglottic narrowing, tracheal narrowing and irregularity of tracheal mucosal wall due to edema and exudative membranes. Pulmonary infiltrates due to bronchopneumonia are frequently seen as a complication of tracheitis. [1]
X Ray
An x-ray may be helpful in the diagnosis of tracheitis. Findings on an x-ray suggestive of tracheitis include: [2] [3] [4] [5] [1]
- tracheal narrowing; known as steeple sign
- irregularity or hazyness of tracheal mucosal wall; known as candle dripping sign
- Pulmonary infiltrates suggesting bronchopneumonia
- Atelectasis
- Hyperinflation
- Pulmonary edema
