Epidemiology and Demographics
The prevalence of onychomycosis is about 6-8% in the adult population.[1].The prevalence of onychomycosis in the United States is around 12%; and increases with increasing age. Approximately 90% of cases of toenail onychomycosis is caused by Trichophyton rubrum.[2]
Diabetics, patients infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), and patients with other types of immunosuppression (eg, transplant recipients and patients on long-term corticosteroid therapy) are at high risk.[3]
