A clinical nurse specialist (CNS) is an advanced practice nurse, with a Master of Science in Nursing. A CNS is similar to a nurse practitioner, however their focus is based on clinical expertise with influence in 3 spheres: patient/family, nurse-nurse and system.

In the Australian Health System, however, a clinical nurse specialist refers to a promotional position, rather than a qualification.
