Overview
Although not a standard modality used to diagnose patent foramen ovale, gadolinium can be injected in the antecubital fossa and the volume of flow across the patent foramen ovale can be calculated. Among patients with a patent foramen ovale, the volume of blood shunted between the right system and the system is 0.4 to 0.6 mL per heart beat.
