Overview

Porphyromonas gingivalis belongs to the Bacteroides genus and is a non-motile, gram-negative, rod-shaped, anaerobic pathogenic bacterium. It forms black colonies on blood agar. It is found in the oral cavity, where it is implicated in certain forms of periodontal disease, as well as the upper gastrointestinal tract, respiratory tract, and in the colon. Collagen degradation that is observed in Chronic Periodontal Disease results in part from the collagenase enzymes of this species.

P.gingivalis and Rheumatoid arthritis

  • P.gingivalis is recognized to be a major pathogen in periodontitis and has been associated with Rheumatoid arthritis in numerous studies.[1] [2] [3]
  • It is the only bacteria known to express the peptidylarginine deiminase enzyme(PAD), playing a major role in peptide citrullination.
  • As the anti-cyclic citrullinated peptide antibodies (anti-CCP) are highly specific for Rheumatoid arthritis and correlate with its severity, the presence of periodontits with P.gingivalis has been thought to be associated with RA.[4]
