Overview
Patent foramen ovale is an inter-atrial communication. However, it is not classified as an atrial septal defect as no septal tissue is missing in them. It should be differentiated from atrial septal defect
Differential diagnosis
- Ostium secundum atrial septal defect
- Ostium primum atrial septal defect
- Coronary sinus
- Sinus venosus atrial septal defect
- Partial anomalous pulmonary venous connection
- Total anomalous pulmonary venous connection
