Overview
Cardiomegaly is often caused by hypertension, but it can also occur as a result of other heart conditions, such as congestive heart failure. Some left ventricular hypertrophy is normal and reversible, such as that seen in athletes and pregnant women. The common causes of cardiomegaly due dilation of the myocardium (not hypertrophy) are dilated cardiomyopathy (non-ischemic cardiomyopathy) and ischemic heart disease.
