Overview
Hyperchylomicronemia occurs more commonly as a result of deficient lipoprotein lipase enzyme. This deficiency could either be genetic as in type I and type V hyperlipoproteinemia or due to conditions such as alcoholism, chronic renal failure, hypothyroidism, and diabetes mellitus which affect the activity of lipoprotein lipase enzyme.

Life-threatening causes include conditions which may result in death or permanent disability within 24 hours if left untreated.
