Overview
Hyperchylomicronemia occurs more commonly as a result of deficient lipoprotein lipase enzyme. This deficiency could either be genetic as in type I and type V hyperlipoproteinemia or due to conditions such as alcoholism, chronic renal failure, hypothyroidism, and diabetes mellitus which lower the activity of lipoprotein lipase enzyme.
Causes
Life Threatening Causes
Life-threatening causes include conditions which may result in death or permanent disability within 24 hours if left untreated.
Hyperchylomicronemia in itself is not a life-threatening condition.
Common Causes
- Alcohol
- Chronic renal failure
- Diabetes mellitus
- Hypothyroidism
- Oral contraceptives
- Pregnancy
- Thiazide diuretics
