Overview
Doxycycline (IPA is a tetracycline antibiotic which is commonly used to treat a variety of infections. Doxycycline product received Food and Drug Administration (United States)|US Food and Drug Administration approval in 1967.[1] Other brand names include Monodox, Microdox, Periostat, Vibra-Tabs, Oracea, Doryx,[2] Vibrox, Adoxa, Doxyhexal, Doxylin, Doxoral, Doxy-1 and Atridox (topical Minocycline hydrochloride for periodontitis).

Mechanism of Action
Doxycycline is primarily bacteriostatic and thought to exert its antimicrobial effect by the inhibition of protein synthesis. it acts by binding to the 30S and 50S ribosomal subunits, which impairs protein synthesis by bacteria. Doxycycline is active against a wide range of gram-positive and gram-negative organisms.[3]
