Acute MR

Chronic MR

Primary MR (Degenerative) Due to the disruption of at least one part of valvular structures as a result of any of the following: Mitral valve prolapse Myxomatous degeneration Fibroelastic deficiency disease Infective endocarditis Connective tissue disease Rheumatic heart disease Radiation heart disease

Secondary MR (Functional) Due to a functional abnormality with a preserved normal structure of the mitral valve as a result of any of the following: Severe left ventricular dysfunction Coronary artery disease Idiopathic myocardial disease
