Overview
Mediastinitis may occur suddenly usually from an infection or it may develop slowly and get worse over time. It most commonly occurs in patients who recently had an upper endoscopy or chest surgery.
Causes
Life Threatening Causes
Life-threatening causes include conditions which may result in death or permanent disability within 24 hours if left untreated.
Common Causes
- Beta-hemolytic streptococcus [1]
- Boerhaave syndrome
- Endoscopy
- Esophageal perforation [1]
- Forceful or constant vomiting
- Median sternotomy [1]
- Trauma
