Risk Factors
- The most potent risk factor in the development of Merkel cell cancer is Immune suppression.
- According to a recent study in the Lancet, Merkel cell carcinoma occurs 13.4 times more often in people with advanced HIV as compared to the general population. Solid organ transplant recipients have similarly increased risk.
- people treated heavily with methoxsalen (psoralen) and ultraviolet A (PUVA) for psoriasis are at increased risk for MCC. [1]
