Overview
On biopsy, Merkel cell cancer is characterized by the presence of neurosecretory granules within cytoplasmic extensions and positivity for cytokeratin-20 immunohistochemical staining.
Biopsy
- Skin biopsy is required for the diagnosis of Merkel cell cancer.
- The histopathological diagnosis of Merkel cell tumor is difficult, and the majority of cases with Merkel cell cancer are often misdiagnosed.
- Cytokeratin-20 immunohistochemical staining is required for the histopathological diagnosis of Merkel cell cancer.
- On biopsy, Merkel cell cancer is often characterized by the following findings:[1]

- Positive staining for cytokeratin-20 immunohistochemical assay
