Retinoblastoma was first described in 1809 by James Wardrop.

Historical Perspective

Retinoblastoma was first described in 1809 by James Wardrop. In 1899, Flexner and Wintersteiner were the first to discover the association between tumor rosettes and photoreceptors of the adult retina. It 1920s Verhoeff claimed that the tumor arose from embryonic retinal cells and hence proposed the name "retinoblastoma."
